It's worth being upfront about something: crystal healing as most people practise it today is largely a 20th-century development, popularised through the New Age movement rather than an unbroken ancient tradition. That doesn't make it less valid to work with (plenty of meaningful practice is recent rather than ancient), but we'd rather be accurate than make a bigger historical claim than the evidence supports.
Our three stones
- Black Tourmaline: a grounding, protective stone, usually kept in a pocket or by a doorway.
- Selenite Wand: used to clear stagnant energy from a space or another stone, and to sweep an altar clean before ritual.
- Mixed Crystal Chips: amethyst, rose quartz, clear quartz, and citrine, sized for layering into spell jars or scattering on an altar.
Cleansing
Cleansing a crystal just means clearing whatever energy it's picked up since you got it, however you understand that. A few common, low-effort methods:
- Moonlight: leave it on a windowsill overnight, especially around the full moon.
- Sound: a bell, singing bowl, or clap near the stone.
- Smoke: pass it through incense smoke.
- Selenite: lay other stones on or near a selenite wand; selenite is traditionally considered self-cleansing and can clear other stones by proximity.
One real physical caution: don't cleanse selenite with water. It's a soft, water-soluble mineral and will scratch, dull, or dissolve if it gets wet or damp for any length of time. Keep it dry no matter which cleansing method you use on your other stones.
Charging
Charging is simpler than it sounds: hold the stone, state or think what you want it to support, and put it where you'll actually see or touch it. Sunlight or moonlight overnight is a common way to reinforce that, though note direct sun can fade the colour of some stones (amethyst included) over repeated exposure, so moonlight is the gentler default.
None of this requires a ritual with props. A stone charged with thirty seconds of genuine intention works as well as one charged with an elaborate ceremony: the elaborate version isn't more effective, it's just more elaborate.
