Whisker & Ash sigil in chrome on black – The Almanac

Candle magic is about as simple as ritual gets: light a flame with an intention in mind, let it burn, and let the burning itself do part of the work. Colour is the main variable most traditions layer on top of that basic act, and it's one of the easiest ways to make a working feel specific without adding complexity.

The ten colours

  • White: purity, peace, truth. The all-purpose stand-in when you're not sure which colour fits, or want a clean slate.
  • Black: banishing, protection, release. Reached for when something needs to be turned away or ended.
  • Red: passion, courage, strength. Love workings, protection with an edge, anything that needs momentum.
  • Royal Blue: peace, healing, truth. Cooler and more grounded than white; good after conflict.
  • Yellow: success, confidence, clarity. Study, interviews, and anything needing a clear head.
  • Orange: creativity, joy, opportunity. Creative blocks, celebration, doors opening.
  • Purple: power, ambition, psychic work. Divination, tarot, and personal-power spells.
  • Pink: love, self-love, friendship. The gentler end of love work, without the intensity of red.
  • Green: money, growth, abundance. Prosperity jars, money bowls, new ventures.
  • Brown: grounding, home, stability. House blessings and steadying work.

A practical note on snuffing

Many practitioners snuff or pinch a spell candle out rather than blowing it, on the folk logic that breath scatters an intention you just spent time building. Whether that matters to you is entirely your call. It costs nothing to do either way, so it's a low-stakes place to try a bit of traditional practice and see if it feels meaningful.
