Like money bowls, road opener rituals have become a fixture of modern witchcraft content, practised widely with no controversy attached to using one. As with that post, we think a short note on the practice's origin belongs alongside the how-to rather than left out of it.
How to work one
- Get specific about what's actually blocked. "Everything" is too vague to work with: name the actual situation on your petition paper.
- Anoint the yellow taper candle with a small amount of the Road Opener oil, working from the middle of the candle outward towards both ends (a traditional way to represent drawing a blockage apart in both directions).
- Place the petition paper underneath or beside the candle holder.
- Set the lemongrass and five finger grass herb bags nearby: some practitioners scatter a pinch around the candle rather than leaving the bags sealed.
- Light the candle and let it burn all the way down in one sitting if you can do so safely; if not, relight it at the same time each day until it's spent.
- Once the candle is fully burned, the working is generally considered complete: some people bury the remains outside, others simply discard them once satisfied.
Where this comes from
Road opener work is a hoodoo tradition, closely tied to the same African American rootwork lineage as the money bowl: a practice for clearing whatever stands between a person and where they're trying to go, historically bound up with specific spirits, prayers, and a rootworker's guidance rather than a fixed retail product.
