Florida Water is one of the odder crossover stories in folk magic: a product that started as a completely ordinary commercial perfume and ended up as ritual essential across several unrelated spiritual traditions, precisely because it was so ordinary.
Where it started
In 1808, New York perfumer Robert I. Murray created Florida Water as a citrus-and-floral cologne, named for the mythical Fountain of Youth said to exist in the Spanish colony of Florida. In 1835 he was joined by David Trumbull Lanman, and the company became Murray & Lanman: still producing a version of the same formula today, over two hundred years later.
How it became a ritual staple
Because Florida Water was just an ordinary cologne, sold openly in any pharmacy, it gave practitioners of hoodoo in the American South, and separately of Santería in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and across the Caribbean, a way to buy a genuinely useful ritual tool without drawing attention: at a time when both traditions faced real persecution and criminalisation. An ordinary bottle of cologne on a shelf didn't raise questions the way an obviously ritual item might have. That accessibility, as much as the scent itself, is why it spread so widely and stuck around so long.
Across both traditions (and the broader Latin American and Caribbean folk-Catholic practice that grew alongside them), Florida Water is used for cleansing a space or person, blessing a new home or object, and refreshing an altar: splashed on hands, added to a floor wash, or misted through a room rather than worn simply as perfume.

Rather than selling the commercial version, we sell the core botanicals (orange peel, cinnamon, lavender, rosemary) so you can build your own batch at home, in keeping with the same home-apothecary tradition that made Florida Water what it is in the first place. You'll need to bring your own alcohol base to finish the infusion; the splash is for cleansing and blessing use, not for drinking.
