Whisker & Ash sigil in chrome on black – The Almanac

Moon magic gets most of the attention in modern witchcraft, but the sun has its own, older correspondence tradition running alongside it, and its daily and yearly cycles map onto ritual timing just as cleanly as the moon's monthly one.

What the sun traditionally represents

Older texts often frame solar energy as "masculine" or "yang" set against the moon's "feminine"/"yin," though plenty of modern practitioners drop the gendered framing entirely and just call it active or outward energy, as opposed to the moon's more receptive, inward quality. Either way, the associations are fairly consistent: vitality, success, confidence, personal power, health, career, and growth.

The sun's daily cycle

Where the moon gives you a monthly rhythm, the sun gives you a daily one, compressed into 24 hours:

  • Dawn: new beginnings, similar in spirit to a new moon. A good moment for a short intention-setting ritual before the day starts.
  • Midday: peak power, similar to a full moon. Traditionally the strongest window for charging solar tools, yellow or orange candles, or sunny-correspondence herbs and stones outdoors in direct light.
  • Dusk: release and wind-down, similar to a waning moon. A natural point to close out a working or release something from the day.

One caution carried over from our crystal post: direct sunlight can fade some stones over repeated exposure (amethyst included), so charge coloured crystals in sunlight sparingly rather than as a daily habit.

The sun's yearly cycle

The solstices already covered in our sabbat guide are the sun's own version of a full and new moon: the summer solstice (Litha) as the sun's peak strength, and the winter solstice (Yule) as its lowest point before beginning to return. If you're already marking those two sabbats, you're already doing seasonal sun work without necessarily labelling it that way.

A simple way to start

Step outside at sunrise with a specific intention in mind, say it plainly to yourself, and let the day be the working itself rather than a single ritual moment. No candle or tool required, though a yellow or orange one is a natural fit if you'd like to add one.
