Whisker & Ash sigil in chrome on black – The Almanac

Knot magic shows up across an unusually wide spread of unconnected folk traditions: sailors historically bought knotted cords believed to control the wind, and various European folk-magic records describe tying a specific number of knots while speaking an intention aloud. The mechanism is almost embarrassingly simple: a knot is something you can physically feel yourself tying an intention into, which is exactly why it's lasted.

Our three colours

  • Black: binding, protection, banishing. Reached for when a working needs to hold something down or turn something away.
  • Red: passion, life force, binding love. Used in handfasting and commitment work as well as desire-focused spells.
  • Tan: grounding, earth, neutral binding. A good default when a working doesn't call for a stronger colour association.

A simple nine-knot working

One widely published structure ties nine knots along a length of cord, one at a time, speaking a short line with each knot. A commonly used version goes: "By knot of one, the spell's begun," "by knot of two, it cometh true," and so on through nine, though the exact wording varies a lot between sources and you're free to write your own. Tie the knots spaced evenly along the cord, hold your intention through each one, and keep the finished cord somewhere meaningful: on an altar, under a pillow, or carried with you, depending on what the working was for.

To release a working built this way, some practitioners untie the knots in reverse order; others cut the cord instead. Neither is more correct than the other.
